- We have received a science grant to visit the North Slope of Alaska, on
- the Artic Ocean, at Point Franklin which is a barren uninhabited peinsula
- located between Barrow and Wainright. The purpose is for archeological
- exploration with a 3-D underground imaging system. I will visit about 5
- times over a period of three years starting on July 11, 1994. Need advice on
- the best way (equipment and procedures) to set up a briefcase size packet
- link to a satellite? What about the new UHF/VHF doppler tracking
- radio's? Whatever I bring must be compact and efficient as I've got to
- pack it all in along with my other gear. There are no buildings there so
- the setup will be in the open or in the kitchen or one of the sleeping tents.
- Would it be better to attempt an HF link? I would like to connect to the
- internet via one of the gateways. The link I have tried from packet in
- Fairbanks to a gateway in Pennsylvania was very slow! Seems like the
- gateway should be at the western end. I need suggestions of the most
- efficient gateway and the best location. What do I designate as my "home"
- bbs?
-
- There is no power where I am going, except batteries and a charging
- generator that will be used to power the laptops used for data logging and
- the microwave imaging equipment. Perhaps on a later trip I can bring a
- sailboat windmill generator for battery charging.
-
- Also, need comments on best HF and HF/packet setup. I have a Kenwood
- TS-50 and tuner but need comments on antennas and bands. The
- communications destination is Pittsburgh, PA.
